in his day the boot was a hessian and leather combination but the invention of vulcanized rubber in the mid-nineteenth century transformed the popularity of this kind of boot and led it to be a crucial part of the industrial environment which grew with the industrial revolution and has been present ever since.
rubber is waterproof and the mass production of the industrial revolution all of a sudden saw mens wellies produced in quantity and replacing the footwear previously used in many work places. previously the farming sector had generally worn wooden shoes which could do nothing to prevent the foot getting damp within minutes. a day's work with wet feet was not very enjoyable. the alternatives were canvas or leather and neither really did the job. |
